How does a spray tan affect tattoos?

1/7/2017

Picture
How will a spray tan affect a tattoo?  It’s a common question and concern for some clients with body art.

The active ingredient in the sunless solution, Dihydroxyacetone or DHA, works with the skin's proteins and amino acids and turns the skin a brown color when it's exposed to oxygen.  To draw a comparison, it’s a process similar to what happens when you slice open an apple and leave it sitting out.  The flesh turns brown due to it’s exposure to air also known as oxidation.

Most tattoos contain enough pigment that the DHA will only affect the skin, and not the color of the tattoo.  Some lighter colors such as pale yellows, flesh colors, or white tattoos may, however, darken slightly with the application of DHA.  The majority of our "tatted up" clients have found no issue with spray tanning over their tattoos and spray tan weekly.

If you are concerned about your tattoo, ask your spray tan technician to apply a bit of barrier cream to the area prior to spraying to protect to color.  When exposed to UV light from the sun or a tanning bed, proper precautions should be taken to keep the color from fading.  Try using a broad spectrum SPF sunblock or tattoo balm stick to protect your tattoo.

Spray Tan Tips: Shaving with a Spray Tan

11/8/2016

STOP and GLOW always recommends limiting the amount of times you shave post-spray tan but there comes a time when you absolutely have to so we have compiled a short tip list to help you avoid removing your spray tan.

Use a sharp razor when shaving with a spray tan

Since spray tans only affect the top 25% of our skin, dull razors sometimes tend to take dead skin along with them too (your spray tan). This could result in an uneven fade, or even a distinct difference in color where you shaved.  One way to avoid this is to only shave with a new or sharp razor.  It’s always best to limit the amount of times you shave after a spray tan but when you do make sure to use a fresh razor for best results.

Keep your razor blade sharp by soaking it in olive oil or alcohol

Did you know that you can preserve your razor by soaking it in olive oil or alcohol?  During the summer, we most definitely shave more than any other time of year.  We need to extend the lives of our daily used razors as long as possible, because using a dull razor on your spray tan could end up taking not only unwanted hair, but skin (and you tan) as well.  Next time you use a new razor, rinse it off and soak it in olive oil or alcohol during the time between your next shave.  You’ll find out the razor stays sharp longer than when you just leave it in the shower where it’s exposed to moisture.

Shave with conditioner

Most conditioners do not contain ingredients like alcohol and mineral oil that is often found in soaps and shaving cream.  Using products with alcohol and mineral oil can cause your sunless tan to fade prematurely.  A conditioner can help to keep your legs smooth and also help prolong the life of your tan!  You’ll find that typically a conditioner is cheaper than shaving gels or creams.
After you shave use a Norvell Prolong sunless tan extender

It's always best to have a product on hand like Norvell Prolong to help moisturize your skin and extend the life of your spray tan.  This goes double for after you shave with a spray tan. Prolong is a sunless moisturizer that combines a hint of color and natural enzymes to provide 24 hour skin hydration.

How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?

7/13/2016

When you consider getting a spray tan, you're naturally going to wonder how long your spray tan will last?  Timing is everything before an event or wedding so you'll need to know how far in advance to get a spray tan and how long it will last.

Typically, a spray tan will last anywhere from 5-10 days.  However, there are several factors that contribute to the lifespan of the spray tan which can dramatically affect the results.

The active ingredient in tanning sprays is DHA or dihydroxyacetone. When sprayed, the DHA reacts with the outer skin and the color changes starts to appear.  However, within a short time the dead skin cells collapse to make way for the new cells to come up.  When this happens, some of the tanning color also tends to fade.  This is the reason why the tanning color appears to fade within a short time because dead skin replacement is a continuous process.

So how do you make your spray tan last?  Read our top 5 tips to make your spray tan last.

You can usually get a better idea of the longevity of spray tans after you have had the first application.   This is why we typically recommend brides should do a test spray tan to evalaute the results.

Everyone has different skin and the tan will naturally last longer on some than others.  Once you know for how long a spray tan usually lasts, you can schedule your next appointments to keep your skin bronzed.

Now Offering Norvell Venetian ONE: Shower in an Hour After Spray Tan

2/29/2016

Rapid Spray Tan
Norvell Rapid Solution- Venetian ONE
Venetian ONE is a great compliment to our spray tan solution product line and allows for you to shower after your spray tan in as little as an hour.  Venetian ONE is perfect for clients that need a spray tan last minute or for those people that do not like to wait 12+ hours to rinse off the color guard.

Venetian ONE creates the same end result as our highly sought after Venetian solution but in a rapid rinse formula.

Here is how Venetian ONE works:

After your spray tan application, we recommend a warm water rinse (no soap, no hot water)
  • 1-hour to achieve Light Bronze Color
  • 2-hours to achieve Medium Bronze Color
  • and 3 or more hours for Darkest Bronze Color
  • For those with very fair skin tones:  To avoid over tanning, it is not recommended for fair skinned individuals to exceed the 3-hour wait time before their warm water rinse
It is important to note that DHA continues to react with the skin after your first shower and the full color may not be completely recognizable for up to  24-hours.  Cosmetic bronzers will wash away during the warm water rinse and this is what we refer to as the color guard.
